At the start of this month, Hotstar viewers were witness to the app donning a new look which was a part of the Disney+ Hotstar rebranding exercise. Citing the postponement of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, Hotstar today confirmed that the launch of the streaming service has also been pushed ahead and that new dates will be announced soon.
Commenting on the development, Uday Shankar, President – The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India said, “We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with the beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon.”

A month ago during an earnings call, Bob Iger, Disney chief executive officer was quoted saying that India is one of the world’s largest entertainment markets and the streaming service will be rolled out at the beginning of the next edition of the IPL cricket tournament, the most noteworthy event on Hotstar all year. Further sharing that Disney+ had amassed 26.5 million paying subscribers worldwide.
On March 11 a beta version of the Disney+ content was made available for a limited number of users. The Disney+ option could be seen at the bottom of the homepage and the app icon was modified too. The content library boasts of international super hits like Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, and Disney TV shows including Mickey Mouse (Shorts), Doc McStuffins.
