Certain media networks had been putting out campaigns across social media platforms about the upcoming coverage of election results on their non-news channels. This was seen as a clear attempt towards promising consumers more election coverage and in-turn giving advertisers ‘higher consumer attention’.
This intervention of MIB was resultant of these broadcasters flouting the Policy Guidelines for Uplinking of Television Channels From lndia, 2011, where the Ministry gives permission for uplinking of TV channels under two categories:
(i) Non-News & Current Affairs: A channel which does not have any element of news and current affairs in its programme content.
(ii) News & Current Affairs: A channel which has any element of news and current affairs in its programme content.

MIB further added that at the time of applying for a Non-News TV channel, the applicant company gives an undertaking that the proposed channel is purely an entertainment channel and does not have any news or current affairs based programme.
In light of these guidelines, it was advised by the Ministry that all TV channels strictly ensure there is no violation in terms of complying with the mandated content and further aforementioned conditions.
