The numbers for digital as well as consumption of news are on the rise, shows the recent Indian Readership Survey report. The percentage of persons who accessed the internet in the last month have jumped from 24% in the first quarter of 2019 to 29% in the second quarter. It is also worth noting that the size of the universe considered in the survey saw a hike from 107,85,43 to 108,71,43.
In the case of the urban population, the numbers hiked from 39% in the first quarter of 2019 to 44% in the second quarter of 2019, and in the case of the rural demographics, the hike was from 16% to 22%. The number of persons in the universe for the urban areas covered increased from 37,69,76 to 38,06,77 and in case of rural, it swelled from 70,15,67 to 70,64,66 in the second quarter.

Numbers for digital news consumption too are on the rise. While the percentage of people consuming a newspaper online in the last month saw a slight dip from 6.3% in the first quarter of 2019 to 6.1% in the second quarter, the percentage of persons reading any news online saw a hike from 8.5% to 9.3% in the second quarter.
The numbers for persons reading a newspaper online in 2017 were 4.4% and the numbers for any news online were 4.8% in 2017, says the IRS report. When it comes to the consumption of news in any form online in the last month, the percentage of persons was 7.3% and saw a leap to 12.1% in the first quarter of 2019. In the second quarter, the numbers have reached 13.4%.
